Crop Over Festival of Barbados

Crop Over Festival of BarbadosThe Crop Over Festival in Barbados is the island’s most popular and colorful summer festival to enjoy.  The event dates back to about 1780 when the island was the world's largest producer of sugar. When the sugar season ended, a big celebration started to mark the finale of a successful sugar cane harvest, hence the name Crop Over.

The Crop Over Festival creates an exciting element of Bajan culture which infuses a variety of themes showcased in parades and parties all over the island. Crop Over Festival is the largest event that occurs in July and spans over a five week period with thrilling parades and colorful parties, until the first Monday of August. During the Crop Over Festival you will enjoy fun activities that will keep you on your feet for hours.

From the costume band launches, beach parties, weekly themed fetes like Glow, Blackout, Insomnia, Masquerade and much more, Crop Over Festival will have reveling with the locals while you enjoy the music, craft displays and entertainment of the festival. Mud, paint and oil will be plastered on you while you jump and celebrate with the revelers in the streets.

You can parade across the stage of the National Stadium and then make your way down to the Spring Garden Highway for the crowning of the King and Queen of the festival. This is where the most dynamic male and female cane cutters of the season are crowned with a fabulous headband. The children are not left out of this amazing event, as they can participate in the Kiddies Kadooment. You will be able to purchase beautiful costumes so they can join in the fun. Folk concerts, art and photographic exhibitions are also part of the Crop Over Festival as it aims to highlight Barbadian rich history and culture.

Calypso music is one of the main features of the Crop Over festival, as the Sweet Soca competitions are among the event’s most popular proceedings. The exciting finale of the festival is called the Grand Kadooment, where you will see carnival parades featuring large bands with members dressed in colorful and amazing costumes showing various themes. Spring Garden is where the final fete for the event takes place. The party normally continues to the wee hours of the morning with vibrant music, lots of food and drink while the nearby beach offers a refreshing place to take a dip.

A wonderful festival with a splendid end, ignite your spirit and travel to Barbados this summer for great Bajan rhythms, as the pulsating fireworks of Crop Over Festival will provide an exciting island vacation.
