Garrison Savannah Race Track1The Garrison Savannah racetrack is situated less than two miles outside the capital of Bridgetown, Barbados. It has been the home of horse racing since the colonial days of 1845, where horse racing takes the parish of St. Michael to an exciting level. Although the races are the same as elsewhere, racing at Garrison Savannah is an incredible way to enjoy attractions on the island.

You will be filled with excitement as you see the cheerful Bajans root for on their horse with love. Garrison Savannah has quite a history; this area was where the British military was stationed for a time. When the officers of the British regiment began racing their horses against each other competitively, wealthy merchants and planters joined them later, hence started the sport of horse racing in Barbados.

The Racing at Garrison Savannah is fantastic and truly catching and is a great day’s adventure for the entire family. Your kids can play at the small park while you have fun with the horses. You will get to meet the friendly local, who will gladly fill you in on whom to place your bet on or which jockey is the best and the horse that's sure to win. The track is a six furlong oval grass strip and races range in distance from 6 to 11 furlongs with the horses running in a clockwise direction.

Racing can be viewed from a number of different areas, as this turf provides a grand stand, field stand and the Chandler stand areas. If you like you can hang out under the shady trees around the track for an up close and personal experience with the beautiful horses and jockeys. The cost to enter this exciting venue for regular races is Grand stand $20.00, Chandler stand, $10.00 and Field stand $10.00. Prices quoted are in Barbados dollars and may vary on holidays and on Sandy Lane Gold Cup Day, which is run on the first Saturday in March each year.

Other major horse races to enjoy are the Banks Guineas in March, Heineken Stakes on Boxing Day, United Barbados Derby in August and The 5000 in February. The horse racing season at Garrison Savannah is held almost the entire year, however it is break up into three racing seasons, January to April, May to August and October to December, so if you are visiting Barbados there's a good chance you will get to take in thrilling horse racing at Garrison Savannah.
